Research field

The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) aims to understand the general principles of temporal dynamics throughout the organismal lifespan from birth to death, including aging. Our interdisciplinary approaches include imaging, multi-omics, theory, molecular biology, stem cell biology, organoids, and diverse animal models. The BDR has a center-wide collaboration project called, "QMIN: Quiescence Manipulation and Investigation of Natural-hypometabolism," to understand and manipulate hibernation/torpor, a natural energy-saving mechanism that allows animals to overcome adverse situations through an autonomous reduction of basal metabolism.
We seek to recruit a Team Leader who will carry out challenging and innovative research on the phenomena of hibernation at the individual, tissue and cellular levels. The candidate can conduct experiments using animal models such as hamsters and mice or cells derived from hibernators and apply basic molecular biological or physiological approaches. We also encourage proposals for developing methods to induce energy-saving conditions in non-hibernating animals, including humans, and proposals that take advantage of experimentally tractable approaches such as investigating the mechanism of dairy torpor, a phenomenon related to hibernation. In order to understand these low metabolic states of hibernators, the candidate will be required to promote their own research and lead research projects involving multiple researchers within and outside of RIKEN. The candidate is strongly encouraged to participate in the QMIN project.
BDR provides an excellent environment for independent early-career Team Leaders, including internationally competitive start-up packages, and annual research funds and mentoring by experienced senior PIs. The Team Leader will have access to cutting-edge facilities, including various animal models, mouse genome engineering, multi-scale imaging and omics, and structural biology, and have opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions, industry, and affiliated graduate schools. For more information, please visit the BDR website
We welcome applications from candidates of any gender or nationality, and encourage applications from those who will broaden RIKEN's diversity. The working language for all discussions open to BDR members is English.
